Why? The Science indicates that global temperatures are dangerously close to the highest ever estimated to have occurred in the past million years. If we do not slow down the rate of global warming, many species are likely to become extinct. This is largely due to gas emissions. High energy prices, pollution, and damage to the environment are all reasons for us to Conserve, Recycle, and be more Eco-Friendly.
What Can We Do? Americans want to help but do not know how to get started. In some homes, almost half the energy is wasted. The Omaha Home and Garden Show will showcase the latest products and services, and have experts discussing ways you can save on energy costs and help the environment. The
City of Omaha Recycling Department, Keep Omaha Beautiful, and others will be featuring ideas you can use in your own home, from increasing the home’s insulation and energy efficiency to simply replacing a light bulb.
What ‘s the idea? One highlight of the Omaha Home & Garden Expo will be a Room Design Showcase, which will feature compact fluorescent bulbs using two-thirds less energy and lasting ten times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.
According to one study, if every one of 110 million American households bought just one fluorescent bulb and replaced one ordinary 60-watt bulb, the energy saved would be enough to power a city of 1.5 million people. According to the same study, in terms of oil not burned, or greenhouse gases not exhausted into the atmosphere, one bulb is equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the roads.
