                           FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The FWAA for the 13th consecutive year awarded Omaha as the Host City to present the Outland Trophy to college football’s top interior lineman. This year the Outland Trophy Award Dinner will be held Thursday, January 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, 16th & Dodge Streets.

The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards will be televised Thursday, Dec. 10, from 7-9 p.m. on ESPN, where this year's Outland Award winner will be announced. The show will be hosted by ESPN's Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit. This year’s winner and his coach will be in attendance at the Dinner on January 14th. Last year Andre Smith (6’-5”; 330 lbs.) from University of Alabama, and his Coach were in attendance along with a delegation from the University of Alabama.

This prestigious football evening will also feature former Outland Award Winner John Hicks (Ohio State ’73). Downtown Rotary is sponsoring his Outland Trophy. From 1946 through 1989, the Outland winner was presented a plaque and not the authentic Outland Trophy.

John Hicks came within an eyelash of pulling off one of the biggest triple plays in college football history in 1973. That year Hicks, a 6-3, 258-pound offensive tackle, won the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award as the nation’s best interior lineman and also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting. How close did Hicks come to becoming the first interior lineman ever to win the Heisman? Well, while he finished second that year, teammates Archie Griffin and Randy Gradishar were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the balloting. By combining Ohio State’s total votes, Hicks would have had enough votes to move ahead of winner John Cappelletti.

Also appearing at the dinner for the 12th straight year will be the winners of Nebraska's football senior awards - the Novak Trophy, the Chamberlin Trophy and the Cletus Fischer Native Son Award.

Nebraska tackle Ndamukong Suh has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for games of the weekend of Oct. 10. He is also on the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award Watch list and is receiving outstanding reviews from coast to coast for all the Major Awards.
